UPDATE: Fire destroys a third of Umpiem Mai refugee camp

A fire that broke out around midday at Umpiem Mai camp, in Tak province destroyed a third of the camp – more than a 1,000 houses, three mosques and two nursery schools.

The humanitarian organization, the Thai Burma Border Consortium, Burma state on their website.
“Patients evacuated from the clinic are now taking shelter in the food warehouse. Some people suffering from burns – no details as yet, but the fire continues unabated. TBBC staff are on site helping to coordinate a response with the community.”

The TBBC are a humanitarian organization that provides food, shelter and essential non-food items to as many as 145,000 refugees from Burma, now living in camps along the Thai Burma border.
