Border Based Group Come Together To Help Burma’s Flood Victims

The Thai-Burma border based Emergency Assistance and Relief Team (EART) has opened a donation center to accept aid for Burma flood victim.

The EART is made up of community groups to provide emergency aid – members include Mae Tao Clinic, Burma Medical Association, Back Pack Health Worker Team and Children Development Center based on the Thai border town of Mae Sot.

Ko Gyi Kyaw, a coordinator for EART spoke to Karen News about the donation center.

“We can’t help the flood affected community physically, so we have organized this donation center in order to be helpful in other ways.”

The EART donation center is now operating out of Mae Tao Clinic’s public information department. Donation can also be made through contacting these provided numbers; +66 993315450 and + 66 930686226.

Ko Gyi Kyaw said that donations will be delivered to the flood affected community through Taungalay Monastery in Hpa-an and through country based community based groups such as the Myawaddy Saydana Funeral Service Association and the 88 Generation Transparent Society and civil society groups.

The Karen Student Network Group (KSNG), a refugee camp based student organization are collecting donations to assist flood victims in Karen State.

Saw Htoo Htoo, a central committee member of the KSNG told Karen News that their members are now collecting donations that will be delivered to flood affected communities.

“Our target groups will be in Karen State. We will provide cash donations, food items and clothes. Our members have started collecting donations in refugee camps. We plan to go into Karen State to deliver the assistance next week.”

A number of Thai based Burmese communities have got to together to help Burma’s flood victims. Burmese migrant workers’ have started to raise funds for the flood affected communities, Karen community based organizations on the Thai-Burma border and local community groups have set-up donation collection points on the new Myawaddy-Kawkareik Asia-Highway – the recent battlefield between government troops and the Democratic Karen Benevolent Army.
