A large jubilant crowd of chanting people crowded around the National League for Democracy’s (NLD) headquarters in Rangoon to celebrate what they claim is a landslide victory for ‘the country’s rightful leader – Daw Aung San Suu Kyi’.
The NLD say the result means Aung San Suu Kyi can now take her seat in Burma’s parliament for the first time.
Delighted local NLD officials claim Mrs Suu Kyi won a staggering 90% of the votes in Kawhmu. This figure is unofficial and based on NLD estimation only. Election officials estimate it would take around five days for official results to be confirmed.
But for the hundreds of delighted NLD voters it was enough to know their vote had finally counted, Daw Aung San Suu Kyi won and could now represent them in parliament.
